Things to Look for When Choosing a Gym

by Carol Young

The gym is a modern day shrine for health enthusiasts who are concerned about their physical fitness and their lifestyle. In the last ten years, we have witnessed a massive increase in number of gyms and fitness centres across towns and cities, all housing modern equipment for the benefit of their patrons. They have an ever increasing number of members, and the list is not restricted to body builders or sportsmen. There is a much greater thrust on the need for staying fit, so people of all genders and from all age groups and professions are registering for the membership of gyms.

However, the growing popularity of the ‘gym culture’ has led to the opening of various pseudo centres which fail to live up to the required level, and adversely impact the health of their patrons. Therefore, deciding on the correct gym is possible only if a few important factors are kept in consideration.

Your motivation levels can be significantly impacted if the gym is situated far off from your office or residence. Hence, close proximity of the gym is very important. The overall environment in the gym, which includes the attitude of the staff, the layout, air-conditioning etc, must also be considered. Moreover, the interiors must not be cluttered with equipments or cause any sort of consternation during exercise. The quality of the gym in terms of modern equipment and services must be verified as working on sub standard equipment can be very risky.

A gym housing additional facilities like sauna baths is always a better choice. To make sure that children can be taken care of during their parents’ workout sessions, some gyms also provide day care centres inside their premises.

Another crucial factor is whether the gym offers personal training facility or not. Personal training is a great way to get yourself a customized fitness routine and to stay motivated. The more focused, committed and approachable a personal trainer is, greater are the chances of the member getting good advice and training.

One last thing to ensure is that the enrolment fee of the gym must be within the range and in accordance with the facilities and services that the gym promises. Flexible and long term packages made available by some gyms are particularly helpful in increasing affordability, but try to avoid too long a lock-in period.

The aim is to be content and rejuvenated after every exercise routine inside a gym and your level of expectations are what should ultimately guide you in your decision.
