That means that I wouldn’t consider a bet on Duke to be a good value unless I was getting a price that a) accurately reflected the true probability of their winning and b) gave me some compensation for assuming the “risk of the unknown” inherent in taking the position so far in advance. At +500 I might be interested, but at +200 the value just isn’t there.
In a less competitive field, there can be instances where even a big favorite is a good value. For example, lets say a book was to take action on a bikini contest between a Victoria’s Secret supermodel and three members of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The model would essentially be a 100% probability to win the contest, meaning that even a high chalk price would be a good value. Risking a lot of money to win a little is a tough thing to justify, however, even if the math makes sense.
Don’t get seduced by big underdogs: Sports betting is not a place to make the “big killing”. It may happen occasionally, but more often it doesn’t. While a sports book might offer a huge price on a cellar dwelling team to win the World Series, the big payback does not mean its a good value. On a practical level, there’s probably nothing wrong with throwing a few bucks on a wager like this with a huge payback if the impossible occurs. My only problem with this is that making too many bets like this just perpetuates bad sports betting habits. If you’re strictly a recreational player, no big deal. If you aspire to bet professionally, or at least want to pursue it with some degree of seriousness I’ve always maintained that you need to develop discipline that’s not situational. In other words, if you want to be a serious sports bettor you need to approach it with a consistent level of seriousness at all times. Simply stated, the concept of value works the same at the bottom of the wagering ladder as it does at the top. Even if you’re betting a big underdog at a huge price make sure that it accurately reflects the ‘true odds’ of the event occurring.

Even if you’re the type that collects classic Art Bell shows on tape and believes in UFOs you wouldn’t place the probability of this happening at more than a fraction of a percent. The book only offered the “YES” side of the proposition, meaning that you couldn’t lay even a huge price on the more likely outcome. Another book had a futures offering for what would happen first with Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. All of the options were very unlikely–Ashton and Bruce fighting on PPV and my favorite–and the longest odds–Ashton, Bruce and Demi hopping in bed together and releasing a porno video documenting the event. You’d receive a sizable payback if any of the events ever transpired, but I’m not exactly sure how to compute the “true odds” on “when pigs fly.

Sure, a lot can change over the course of the season and it probably will. Still, I have some strong opinions about the state of the league right now and some of the teams that many predicted would dominate.
As much as I believe that Shaquille O’Neal, Vince Carter, and Ron Artest are some incredibly talented players, I simply don’t think they’re the right fits for their teams. I think that each team is struggling to find its way with their new player, and hopefully they can adapt as the season progresses.
In Los Angeles, I think the Lakers were better off with Trevor Ariza than they were with Ron Artest. The conventional wisdom would say the Artest is the better player, but I disagree.
He’s gone from team to team in the NBA and never seems to find a home where he’s loved. LA took a chance with him and I’m not sure that I agree with the move.
Then there are the Cavs. Shaq is a different story than Artest, as he has a great attitude and wants to win. Unfortunately, I think he just throws off the team’s rhythm and his presence in the middle might not be so good for the team. Their record so far would indicate this too.
With the Magic, I’m just not a fan of Vince Carter. I loved him during the earlier part of the decade, but I think that his best days were behind him and I do think that Hedo Turkoglu was a better fit for the team.
The only team that I think got it right with its major acquisition was Boston. Rasheed Wallace plays his heart out, and was a huge contributor to the Pistons. It’s no wonder the Celtics are still undefeated.

Breakout Fading (Part I)

Suppose you believe that the currency prices will not be able to follow through action in the direction of the breakout. Fading breakouts refers to trading against breakouts. When we believe that breakouts from support and resistance levels to be false and unsustainable we fade breakouts.
False breakouts are a bane for breakout traders but boon for breakout faders. False breakouts are also known as fakeouts. Fading breakouts tends to be more effective as a short term strategy. Fading breakout is not meant to be a long term strategy.
Support level attracts the buyers enthusiasm for higher bids. It prevents the price from falling further. The resistance level attracts the sellers enthusiasm for shorting and it prevents the price action from advancing higher. Support and resistance are seen as the price floor and the price ceiling respectively.
The crowd likes to trade the breakout. The idea of trading breakouts appeals to many independent traders especially those new to currency trading. It is perfectly logical for the crowd to think that if the support level is penetrated, then the price action should move downward. The crowd is more likely to sell than to buy.
The opposite is true of a price break above the resistance level. The crowd usually concludes that if the resistance is broken, then the prices are more likely to advance higher in the rally. Hence, the crowd is more likely to buy than to sell.
You will find clusters of stop loss orders placed around both the support and resistance levels. These stop loss orders are placed by traders who have brought near the support level or have sold near the resistance level. Now you can also understand why there tends to be large number of entry stop orders placed just above a resistance level and also placed just below a support level.
When the currency prices crosses below the support level, long positions will be stopped out. Similarly, short positions will be stopped out when the price action breaks out above the resistance level.
Why most breakouts fade? One of the most important reasons why most breakouts fail is due to the fact that winners need to take the money from the losers. It does not always pay to have the same mentality as the crowd. The majority will cash out of the trading game broke.
The crowd holds the dumb money with the weak hands. Smart money belongs to the big players who have a couple of tricks to sabotage the crowd. Money has to be made from the majority. Not from the minority who got it right.
