The History Behind Google

In 1998, two Stanford students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page believed that they could create a search engine that based its results on the relationships between Websites relevant to what the user is searching for. This was an improvement over existing methods at the time. The number of times the keywords appeared on the Web page was the over-riding factor. Another factor, however, was any back links the Web page had which was a system known as Backrub.

Google Adwords came in to light in 2000. It was their advertising model. They offered to establish and maintain and advertising campaign for their client for a monthly fee. Adwords has the ability to estimate the cost per click for a particular keyword. The fact that the adverts are text-based give the page a clean look makes the page load quickly without having to download any fancy graphics. It also created a loyal following with those who use the search engine.

PageRank plays a key role in where a Web page will appear in Google’s search results. It is based around how many other Web pages are linking to it. This is what sets apart PageRank from other SEO techniques.

There are guidelines which Webmasters can refer to ensure that Google crawls, indexes and ranks their site. Although these guidelines are made known, Google are very secretive about how they assign PageRank. This is to avoid any abuse of the system. They do admit that the algorithms they use are based around back links.

Through a combination of developed services, acquisitions and joint ventures, Google has expanded beyond its initial business model and paved their way into other areas such as email, video sharing and others. They also bought a radio advertising company which has led them to explore other forms of advertising other than purely online including both radio and offline publications.
