The Fisher Pen

by Priyesh Resh

The Fisher Space Bullet pen is an Example of Great Modern Design with elegance and wonderful style features.

Well designed pens can look beautiful and intriguing. Some pens are wonderfully ornate encrusted with precious jewels and metals, whilst other pen designs focus on modernity. Lamy design excellent Bauhaus influenced pens, but my favourite example of modern design is the Bullet pen by the Fisher Space Pen Company.

The bullet pen is considered an example of ‘exquisite industrial design’ and is on permanent display at the New York Museum of Modern Art. Its status as a design icon has been enhanced by many endorsements, including an appearance on the Pen episode of Seinfeld.

The Fisher Space Bullet Pen looks exactly like a bullet; sleek and aerodynamic. It could be mistaken for a modern sculpture, perhaps by the famous American sculptor Jeff Koons. He is famous for using highly reflective surfaces, and when the Bullet pen comes in shiny chrome it looks fantastic. Its unique design means that it always gets lots of attention from onlookers, and is sure to impress your friends.

The Bullet Pen was designed to fit in a pocket, and also is quite slim so that it can slip unnoticed into a pocket. Consequently, the Fisher Space Bullet Pen is one of the most practical for when you are travelling or away from your desk.

The Bullet pen looks great, but also has an interesting history. It was designed in the 1960s during the Space race, with the intention that astronauts could write in zero gravity. The pen is fitted with a pressurized ink cartridge which allows the user to write upside down, in water and in extreme temperatures. The pen is available in several finishes, but my favourites are shiny chrome, blueberry and rainbow (very groovy man!)

Types of Ties

by Pri Vag

When buying a tie or any mens accessories, there is now so much choice that sometimes you simply dont know what to buy. With the advent of online retail it has made the consumer process quicker, easier and far more enjoyable. Here is a list of all the types of ties that are now available to customers on the high street and online.

Polyester satin ties are now very popular due to their durability and hardness. They maintain great shape and form when they are worn, and can come in a variety of designs. These ties are the most common on the market today.

Another type is the bow tie which is fairly niche and can only be worn at certain occasions. This makes them less popular than the standard tie but never the less very elegant and stylish when worn. They can come in a variety of styles and shapes and most are pre-tied.

Next we have the novelty tie, which is a very popular gift on all types of occasions. These types of tie are generally themed and are often bought for birthdays and fathers day.

Then we have the wedding cravat, which can compliment the suit of the groom beautifully. This is a very special day and therefore deserves a special type of tie. Pre-tied cravats seem to be the most popular amongst consumers as they are quite difficult to do properly. Whether pre-tied or not, you will certainly stand out from the crowd when wearing this on your wedding day.

Finally, we have the silk tie which is a particular favourite but can often cost the most. The material adds a different type of elegance and brings out a suit very nicely when worn.

So when you are next looking for a new tie, think about all the different options you have available.

Egyptian Divers

by Ned Middleton

Ned Middleton describes how he and a team of Divers from Diving World discovered a wreck in the Egyptian Red Sea.

I joined the M.V. Miss Nouran – and soon discovered her to be one of the finest Live-aboard Boats currently operating in the Red Sea. Easy to say I know – but, believe me, I saw much of the competition over the next three weeks and, well, you don’t want to know about some of those – much less Dive with them!

Our Dive Guide was that well known local character Ali Baba – a man who has been deaf since birth but, who can lip-read in five languages. Ali Baba is an exceptionally fine Diving Guide and Instructor with a great sense of humour and, in a world where other Diving Boats can often make things chaotic for the novice, his one outstanding quality is that he cares!

Being the week before Christmas there were only ten Divers on board a vessel equipped to take 16. Below Decks there are 6 double berths and at deck level there is a further four-man berth all with en-suite – and that means your own shower and flushing toilet. Food is served after each of the three main Dives of the day with the evening meal delayed for those who wish to get an extra night dive into an already busy schedule – and do tuck in, there is plenty.

The crew were pretty amazing and looked after our every need. We were assured that they were the best and it soon became easy to see why. They also worked very hard – one minute they were cooking, cleaning and looking after us, and the next they were manning the ropes, laying out mooring lines, driving the inflatable boat or simply helping us in and out of the water.

As with all such trips we were a fairly disparate bunch with a variety of standards, experience and background. This included two pairs of Technical Divers who had ordered Nitrox. I have yet to use mixed gases but the high level of expertise of these four Divers was going to prove most useful in the days ahead.
